3 Things About Protein You May Not Know

Updated: Oct 2, 2019

Consume protein within 30 minutes of your workout

I had a client who is over 50, tell me the other day that she was shaky after her workout that I designed for her. She had been working out on the brand new program for about two weeks too. This is common and usually a symptom that her body needed protein. And she needs it within 30 minutes of her workout. This will alleviate some of that shaky feeling. Why? Because her muscles were craving something to help them recover. Which lead me to the number 1 thing about protein that you may not know.

1. Aids in recovery. When you do a strenuous workout your body starts to shake in reaction to muscles working and breaking down. You want this to happen because that is how the body builds muscle. When you get protein in your body within 30 minutes of a strenuous workout it will speed itself into your system. You may actually feel a calming sensation as you get this protein into your body.

2. You need at least 20-25 grams of protein at this time. A small glass of milk will not cut it. You need more protein than that. Your body is craving it. Because it is craving it you need more protein than 10 grams.

3. Your body can only absorb so much protein. So you may think drinking a double of your protein shake will be the answer. I actually had a client tell me they did this. But no, that won't work either. Your body can only absorb so much. It seems 20-25 grams is the magic number.

You don't have to do a protein shake. Healthy sources of high quality protein are: milk, eggs, yogurt, turkey, chicken, seafood, steak, and more.

A protein shake is great though because it has the most bang for you buck. I prefer a slow digesting protein like Rule 1. or Trutein. Click the links to buy and check out the products on Amazon.

Also, be sure to get .7 grams-1 gram of protein per pound of weight throughout an entire day. This will ensure you are getting enough protein in your diet to properly build muscle and feel great.

Do you get enough protein? Have any tips for us? Be sure to share!

Have a healthy day!! Kathie
